NCD Check Point Project

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) kill 40 million people each year, equivalent to 70% of all deaths globally.  Each year, 15 million people die from a NCD between the ages of 30 and 69 years; over 80% of these "premature" deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.The prevalence of diabetes is 5.7% in urban Cameroon, with an estimated 1 million diabetic population, 70% of whom remain undiagnosed. Late diagnosis, low awareness on NCDs among locals, inaccessibility to medical facilities, inadequate medical infrastructures, insufficient trained medical personnel’s and knowledge on diabetes among others, continue to be the leading causes of premature mortality resulting from Diabetes. It is for these reasons that Value Health Africa seeks to increase awareness on these diseases through the establishment of community check points.

The goal of this project is to reduce the burden of NCDs (Diabetes, Hypertension and Cervical cancer) through the creation of medical checkpoints within existing community health facilities, as a means of increasing awareness; identifying predisposing factors to these diseases while also improving on early diagnoses.
