Arbre à Palabre – Divorce and Precarity: Are Women the Most Vulnerable?
The debate on "Divorce and Precarity: Are Women the Most Vulnerable?" took place on June 17, 2025, at the Krystal Palace Hotel in Douala, as part of the Arbre à Palabre series organized by Deutsche Welle (DW) in partnership with Sweet FM and other local organizations.
This important gathering brought together legal experts, civil society representatives, media professionals, and members of the public to discuss the deep impact of divorce and economic instability on women in Cameroon. In a context where the legal system often fails to provide adequate protection, the vulnerability of divorced women is a growing concern.
Inspired by the African tradition of community dialogue under the “tree of discussion,” the Arbre à Palabre served as a platform for sharing experiences, raising awareness, and proposing solutions. Discussions emphasized the urgent need for legal reforms, increased economic empowerment, and stronger community support structures.
A Call for Collective Action
Key points raised included:
- Insufficient legal and social support for divorced women;
- Cultural stigma and societal pressure;
- The need to reform Cameroon’s judicial system;
- Empowerment through education and entrepreneurship.
The event's message was clear and strong, captured by the hashtag #NivictimeNicomplice: women must no longer be silent victims or passive accomplices to their own marginalization. Together, we must advocate for justice, inclusion, and lasting change.
DW and its partners remain committed to fostering dialogue and creating opportunities for women to thrive socially and economically.
