Cholera Intervention in the SWR-Cameroon
Since February 2022, the SW region of Cameroon has been raged by a new wave of cholera epidemic. With the first case identified in Ekondo Titi Health district, it rapidly spread to Limbe, Buea, Tiko, Kumba and Mundemba. The daily increase of cases led to the shortage of material and human resources to effectively respond to the epidemic as hospitals became overwhelmed and out-staffed. Vulnerable health facilities like mile 16 integrated health center with limited resources where seen crawling on their needs and in need of an urgent intervention
VAHA intervened with the following activities;
- Infection prevention and control measures in Cholera education of 12 health workers of MUNDEMBA Health facility. Workers at the health center were schooled on IPC policies, IPC committee and IPC including hand washing, patient bed change in a cholera ward, cleaning a cholera ward, disinfecting a cholera Unit, monitoring and evaluation of IPC procedures
- Material donation including PPEs, blood pressure machines, disinfection equipment’s (spraying can, chlorine etc). After the training, the health center was giving materials to effectively attend to cholera patients and for personal protection. Disinfection equipment and materials were given to the cleaning department
Outcome of Activities.
- No mortality due to Cholera in the center after the project
- No staff became infected with Cholera
