🟣 Value Health Africa at the National Assembly With Stop Féminicides237 Collective: Advocating for Women’s Rights in Cameroon
🗓️ On June 20, 2025, the STOP FÉMINICIDES 237 Collective, of which Value Health Africa is an active member, took part in a key session of the Commission on Cultural and Social Affairs at the Cameroon National Assembly.
🤝 This working session brought together critical stakeholders, including the Ministry for the Promotion of Women and the Family 👩🏽⚖️, which presented a detailed overview of the current conditions facing women and girls in the country.
📊 Members of Parliament, led by the Chair of the Commission, reviewed the national report on femicides—a document developed and presented by our Collective. Following this, the Commission formulated a series of strong policy recommendations aimed at improving the social and legal protection of women and girls in Cameroon.
🟪 Our Advocacy Focus Areas:
📘 Adoption of a Family Code
➡️ To strengthen women’s roles within families, especially as 90% of femicides occur in intimate settings 🏠.
⚖️ Legal Recognition of Femicide
➡️ To ensure that femicide is treated as a distinct criminal offense and better prevented.
👶🏽 Social Support for Children of Victims
➡️ To protect and support the most vulnerable following the loss of a parent to violence.
🛑 Repeal of Discriminatory Laws
➡️ To eliminate legislation that enables or fails to punish gender-based violence.
🏛️ Creation of Specialized Courts
➡️ To provide survivors and families access to justice through trained, gender-sensitive judicial mechanisms.
📚 Prevention Through Education
➡️ To promote gender equality, and to ban and condemn sexist and degrading content 🗣️🚫 in public discourse.
✅ This session marked a crucial milestone in the national fight against gender-based violence. Our advocacy was well received, and the Parliamentary Commission pledged to monitor the implementation of the recommendations.
